GEORGE TOWN: Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) students held a garage sale titled ‘The Garaj’ at Anjung Masjid Al-Malik Khalid, USM on Saturday, April 21 to create awareness and fundraise for the orphanage, Rumah Anak Kesayangan.
‘The Garaj’ is a garage sale that sells various used and new goods such as clothes, apparels and other daily household items.

This community service project is organised by five students studying Bachelor of Mass Communication who are taking the subject, ‘Communication for Sustainability Development’, with cooperation from Yu Mai Café, USM School of Communication and USM Islamic Centre.
The Garaj project leader Ahmad Fadhli bin Ab Wahab said this semester marks the debut for their subject lecturer to give them a hands-on opportunity to actually carry out a community service project instead of just writing a proposal about it.
“My team and I posted on social media inviting generous people to donate their used items on Monday, April 16 from 8am to 10am here and we gave them vouchers of Yu Mai Café as a token of appreciation.
“Being an OKU myself, I hope that this project can change Malaysians’ negative perception to look down on people who are less capable of making a living for themselves,” Ahmad commented.
He added that five orphans from Rumah Anak Kesayangan are there to help out on the sales.
The Garaj project group member Tee Hee claimed that they set 17 goals while planning the project but the main focus has been narrowed down to reduce poverty by providing the orphans with skills and knowledge on ways to become independent financially.
Tee added that the project team has to give a Ted-talk like presentation to their lecturer and coursemates after the project is done.
Currently, Rumah Anak Kesayangan is an orphanage based in Bayan Lepas and it houses almost 20 orphans.
